Choose the Perfect Rug Size for Every Room

Space no 1: The Living Room The living room is your home’s center of connection and relaxation. Here a vintage rug can enhance the cohesion of the room, creating a warm, grounding palette underfoot. To achieve the best layout using a vintage rug, we recommend two different placements depending on your room size. For smaller spaces where larger furniture lines the walls, the front feet of the furniture should sit comfortably on the rug. If the space is more open concept with floating furniture, the rug should act as a grounding area, with all furniture sitting within its boundary. For a harmonious look, ensure the rug extends past the sofa or end table by at least 6” on each side and leaves at least 18” between pieces of furniture (e.g., sofa to coffee table). If you have a sectional, we recommend placing the back of it against the rug line. Remember, the rug's orientation should mirror the room's layout, and keep it at least 8”-12” away from the wall. Common living room rug sizes are 8'x10', 9'x12', or 10'x14’ and a good rule of thumb is that the perfect living room rug will take up about 3/4 of the room. Space no 2: The Bedroom The bedroom is a tranquil retreat where a vintage rug can provide both visual harmony and a soft landing for your feet. In order to ensure maximum coverage for a cozy walking space, the rug should extend at least 18” on each side of the bed. Additionally, if there's furniture at the foot of your bed such as a bench or settee, there should be at least another 18” path between that and the end of the rug. Aim for the rug length to match your vanity or sink, but a few inches shorter will work fine, too. Although, avoid placing vintage rugs directly in front of the shower to protect their longevity. Common dining room sizes include 7x11, 8x10, and 9x12.

Space no 5: The Entryway The first impression of your home, your entryway is what greets both you and your guests each time you walk in. We recommend styling a vintage rug here to set a welcoming tone that exudes charming warmth as you step inside. The rug should be centered on the door and match the entryway length. Common entryway rug sizes are 4x6, 5x7, or 3x5 for smaller spaces.
Space no 6: The Hallway The bridge from one room to another in your home, hallways should never be left out of the fun. For a typical hallway, we have a large assortment of runners that are the perfect scale to complement the space. For a long hallway, consider two complementary sister rugs or an extra long runner. Ensure there's a clearance of about 6” of floor on either side to frame the rug and protect its edges.

Space no 7: The Kitchen Often overlooked when it comes to rugs, the kitchen is a canvas for personal style, comfort, and aesthetic continuity with the rest of your home. Contrary to popular belief, a vintage rug in the kitchen is an unexpectedly delightful addition. It not only enhances the room's aesthetic, adding warmth and color, but also provides practical comfort underfoot during lengthy cooking sessions. Even in a space prone to spills, a vintage rug’s durable, stain-resistant materials and intricate patterns are forgiving and easy to maintain. In an L-shaped kitchen, we typically like to favor the sink side or the kitchen’s longest side to style the runner. A 2x10 or 3x10 runner is most common for kitchen placement.

A standard distance between an island and cabinets is around 42", so a 3ft wide rug is often the maximum you can accommodate, leaving at least 3-4" of floor visible on either side.
Space no 8: The Home Office While most office chairs don’t easily roll when atop a rug, we love to bring the warmth of a vintage rug to the study, but rather styled in front of the desk. While the size of the rug for this placement will be dependent on the width of your desk, typically a 6x9 or similar scatter rug will achieve the right proportions within the office space.
